Smiley Faces Generations
There is much debate about the Smiley Faces family tree. The history of Smiley Faces spans many, many years and several smiley faces generations. Much has been written about who invented them, who developed them further and who is the grandaddy of them all.
We do know that there have been several generations and incarnations of smiley faces throughout the time computers have been on this Earth. And they are still continuing to develop and evolve. Darwin would have been proud of the development of Smiley Faces.
The first of the smiley faces generations was the text smiley faces. You know the sort.
:-
These came in many forms and the imagination and ingenuity of the inventors has to be admired. But they were limited by the available characters and what you could do with them. We needed new generations.
The second generation intruduced graphics characters, originally in black and white but soon colored smiley faces started to appear.
The third generation introduced animates smiley faces. The graphics started to move. Once it could do that it opened the door to many new types of smiley faces. Two characters could interact. One could trun round, jump up and down, have moving facial expressions. Smiley Faces could at last smile!
The fourth generation was bigger and not surprisingly better. You no longer needed a magnifying glass to see the smiley faces. Suddenly they were in your face! You couldn’t miss them. They expanded the range of characters, intruduced jobs, professions, and backgrounds to the characters. Smiley faces were no longer floating in a vacuum, but they had a home, a school, a road, a mountain, something to relate to.
The fifth generation developed the art further into 3 dimensions (3D). Smiley Faces were no longer flat people. They had round faces and round bodies. Now we could see them in the real world, with arms and legs that looked real. They could use all sorts of tools and devices which gave tham an extra dimension of emotional behaviour. Smiley Faces looked like real people doing real things and real sports.
I think that brings the smiley faces generations up to date, but it is inevitable that Smiley Faces will evolve further as time goes by. Who knows what the future will bring?
