Smiley Faces History

Smiley Faces or emoticons are in widespread use today. But how and when did they originate?

The origin in history of the original emoticon, the basic smiley face :-), is a matter of some dispute. Kevin Mackenzie is often credited with creating the first emoticon symbol in 1979.

Others give the credit to Scott Fahlman, who created the first digital smiley face and the first virtual frown in 1982. These were the first smiley faces that were not simply made of keyboard characters. In the 1980s, Howard Ball created a different form of the digital smiley face, the yellow upright smiley face that can now recognize today. Howard Ball is a graphic artist who created the first smiley as part of a morale boosting campaign.

Scott Fahlman made smiley faces history by making the first use of smiley faces on the CMU bulletin board system. Scott came up with the idea for emoticons (aka smileys or smilies or smiley faces) because he noticed a problem on the bulletin board system. Certain people would post a humorous or sarcastic comment and the people reading it would not get the joke. That's because it was impossible to express thoughts and feelings like we do in face-to-face communications.

Scott invented the emoticon by suggesting the use of :-) to show pleasure and :-( to show displeasure. The idea solved a problem for many users who felt restricted when trying to express emotions in written communication. Lots of folk started using emoticons and the rest, as they say, is smiley faces history. People started to design their own emoticons and today there are thousands and thousands to choose from in a range of different styles.

Smiley Faces have become increasingly sophisticated. The text based emoticons are rarely used today, having been replaced by graphically rich animated and 3D emoticons.

For more details about the smiley faces history of the emoticons we suggest you visit wikipedia and look at the emoticon page or the smiley page. We do not see any necessity to repeat that history here.
